When filing an income tax return, do I need to include insurance refund from auto accident?
Q. When filing an income tax return, do I need to include insurance refund from auto accident? My car was total loss. My insurance pay off my loan for the car and gave me back $6000 after the payoff. Do I need to report this when filing my income tax return?

A. Assuming that they paid you the fair market value of the car, and that that was less than you paid for it in the first place, you do not need to claim that on your tax return.

Where can I get a tax return for the past 2 years?
Q. A new job I am starting wants to see my tax returns for the past 2 years, but I have been out of work and have not had any income. Where can I get a fake return made up?
Asked by oddcat1978 - Fri Dec 21 10:23:18 2007 - United States - 5 Answers - Comments
A. Why does your job want to see your tax returns? If there is a legitimate reason that you must show you filed a tax return, then send in IRS form 4506-T requesting "verification of non-filing"--this will show that you had no income and no filing requirement. If they are asking because you claimed you made $50K a year in sales or consulting income for the past 2 years and they want to confirm the income, then you are SOL. Tell them the truth. You won't get the job, but the ordeal will be over with. (Sales positions commonly ask to see your W-2s.)

How to amend a 2007 tax return when no forms were submitted that year?
Q. I received no income in 2007, so I didn't file my tax return. Turns out my mom had sold my stocks/bonds that year. I thought she would have to file the sale on her tax return, but I found out 2 years later that they were mine to file. How do I go about correcting this mistake? Thanks! Thanks for the answers. Do I use the 2007 or the 2009 1040 Form?
Asked by T - Wed Feb 3 17:13:43 2010 - United States - 3 Answers - Comments
A. You cannot amend something that was never filed. You will have to file the 2007 return now to report this income and if there is tax due, you will need to include failure to file and pay penalties and interest. Or else, the IRS will send you a nice letter assessing these amounts.

Can one resubmit tax return to just change ITIN to SSN to get econmy stimulus package?
Q. My wife and depecndent child received their SSN this year. I filed tax return jointly with my wife but forgot to change her (and our dependendent sons) ITIN with SSN number. To receive economy stimulus package can we resubmit the tax return changing ITIN to SSN. Also how this could be done?
Asked by AB - Tue May 13 22:29:09 2008 - United States - 3 Answers - Comments
A. The rebate is based on the tax return as originally filed. You will have to wait until you file your 2008 tax return (and be sure to use the SSNs then) to see if you qualify on the 2nd chance worksheet.

tax return 2010 when can you start to file?
Q. I have heard of H and R's anticipated loan or tax return, when can you do this? if this is an anticipated loan or tax return when would you be able to file? if you got all your paper work in order? the earliest you can do tax return with this anticipated loan?
Asked by despite the lies - Sun Oct 31 16:24:49 2010 - United States - 7 Answers - Comments
A. May not be available this year. The IRS will no longer give out debt indicators, so H&R won't know if taxes will be withheld for back child support etc.

Will the tax rebate check be based on my 2007 tax return or an earlier tax return?
Q. I read an email which states that the IRS is cutting rebate checks based on the 2000 tax return. Now, I am confused this doesn't sound correct. This will mean that I will have to share the tax rebate with my ex-husband. This can also cause confusion with incorrect mailing addresses. Can someone clarify this?

How does a tax credit effect a tax return?
Q. I usually get about $3,000.00 total for state and federal tax returns. I bought my first home in 2009 so I am eligible for the federal tax credit being offered. Just wondering roughly how much extra I can expect in my tax return in 2010. Anyone know?
Asked by lyndsey7323 - Thu Oct 29 14:48:50 2009 - United States - 3 Answers - Comments
A. it depends on when you bought the house, if the mortgage interest and property taxes plus your other itemized deductions do not exceed your standard deduction, for this year it will mean nothing you will have the FTHB credit coming however in 2010 with a full year of mortgage payments, your itemized deductions will definitely be changed

I did not file income tax return for the past 10 years?
Q. I am an USA citizen (California resident). I moved to Taiwan 10 years ago to teach English. In the past 10 years, I file tax return in Taiwan, but I thought I don't need to file tax return in USA and California. I earn approx. US$30,000 every year. Now I am applying green card for my wife. The embassy here ask me to file tax return for year 2005. My questions are: 1. Do I need to file income tax return (Fed and CA) for the past 10 years now? 2. Would I be penalized for not filing in the past? 3. Is private tutor income qualified for foreign earned income credit? If my students did not give me invoice, what kind of supporting document is needed?
Asked by Chu K - Mon Jan 22 20:51:28 2007 - United States - 1 Answers - Comments
A. I'd strongly suggest that you consult with a CPA or tax attorney. Among other things, you must file a timely return to claim the foreign earned income exclusion. You may well be penalized for late filing and payment of any taxes due. Those tax years are all still open and need to be closed. As I said, you need professional help and you need it quickly.

How do I pay more taxes/forfeit my tax return?
Q. I'm 17 and I just got a job with Mc Donald's, and I've heard about tax returns, and I was wondering how I can pay more taxes and let the government keep my tax return. Is this possible? I want to pay more taxes that the government can actually keep. Thanks I want to give to the government, not a charity. I'm just asking how I can do it. Can you send them a check?
Asked by Pearl Jam - Tue Jun 5 12:53:22 2007 - United States - 7 Answers - Comments
A. Actually you can make donations to the government. Each department has rules on how you might do such a thing. The following link is for the Department of Commerce. It was just the first that I found so every Department will have something similar. You can not give anything to individuals nor may you give the intent of getting anything back (sort of like with taxes). However it would be much wiser if you were to put that money in some sort of savings plan. When you are "old" you will have lots of money and will not need to be dependent on the government.

A. If you understand it you can use e tax (software u download to complete tax online) for this 2007-08 financial year. As for the previous years head to your Local Tax office and they will give you everything you need to complete these. If this is your fisrst time at doign tax yourself try to get someon who has done it themselves to help you as it is quite complicated when you first start doing these. If this is no help go see an accountant.

What is the average tax return for a homeowner in the state of florida?
Q. As a new home owner I am curious whether my current return is typical. I know it varies from one situation to the other. I am contemplating wether or not to go to a tax professional, or if to go ahead and e-file myself. As a new home owner I dont want to overlook anything. I think its bizarre that my tax return as a home owner is only $200 more than when I didnt own a home.
Asked by Seeking Custom Paint Job - Fri Apr 16 02:32:41 2010 - Other - Taxes - 1 Answers - Comments
A. There is no meaningful average. You don't "receive" a tax return, you FILE a tax return. When you get money back, that's called a REFUND. Realtors tend to grossly overstate the tax advantages of owning a home as part of their sales pitch. While you can deduct mortgage interest and property taxes the only tax benefit is from the amount that your itemized deductions exceed your standard deduction amount, multiplied by your marginal tax rate. You get a standard deduction of $5,700 (double that on a joint return if married) merely for surviving past midnight on Dec 31st. If you had $6,500 in itemized deductions and were in a 25% tax bracket the tax savings would be the $200 that you are seeing.

How do I amend a tax return to reflect a change in social security income?
Q. I am trying to help out a relative who accidentally listed their monthly social security amount instead of the yearly on their 2007 tax return. None of the social security is taxable, but she was disqualified from a stimulus payment because the amount she put on her taxes was under $3000. There isn't a space to include this on the amended return. Is it okay just to send a regular 1040A?

A. File a 1040X and state the reason for the amendment in the explanation section, with the dollar amount of the Social Security payment. Write a notation across the top of the 1040X such as "Social Security Rebate"

How much tax return will i get back if i claim one dependant?
Q. If i make 65,000 a year and single/independent, how much will i receive in tax return if i claim my brother as one of my dependents? He has had no income this year and is considered an adult. I live in LA,CA. Can someone give me an estimate assuming im paying 25%~ tax? HR calculator seems a bit off, they say i only get taxed 16% but i actually get taxed 26%
Asked by Henry - Sat Nov 14 03:43:29 2009 - United States - 4 Answers - Comments
A. first of all, your brother may not qualify for the 'qualifying relative' he must have lived with you the entire year, he must be a member of your household he can't have earned his personal exemption and you must be providing more than 50% of his support if you make $65,000, you will have $7300 personal, $8350 standard deduction leaving $49350 taxable, and yes, I would say that would fall in the 28% bracket

How much tax return will I get back if I donate my car to charity?
Q. Someone told me you get $500 in tax return if you donate your car to charity. I live in California so another state could be different.
Asked by Waldo Waldo Waldo! - Fri Oct 5 22:30:04 2007 - United States - 10 Answers - Comments
A. First of all, you can only deduct a charitable contribution if you itemize, so if you don t itemize, there s no tax benefit to you from the donation. Charities usually sell donated cars at auction, and they ll give you a receipt for the car showing how much it sold for that s the amount you can deduct. Be aware that cars being auctioned usually sell below what would be fair market value. The tax benefit from the deduction is at most the amount of the deduction times your tax bracket. So if they sold the car for $3000, and your tax bracket is 15%, your tax savings would at most be $450. This is for federal taxes, so the rules are the same in every state of the US.

Q. Someone told me you get $500 in tax return if you donate your car to charity. I live in California so another state could be different.

A. First of all, you can only deduct a charitable contribution if you itemize, so if you don t itemize, there s no tax benefit to you from the donation. A. Noone can answer your question because you haven't said how much tax has been withheld from your wages in the tax year, amongst other things. If too much has been withheld (based on your taxable income and the rates of tax applicable to you) then you may get a tax refund after lodging a tax return (the form you complete and submit to the ATO declaring your income ect etc).. Note the critical difference between a tax refund and a tax return. Perhaps you should go to a cheap tax accountancy place like ITP or H & R Block in July, or as soon as you have received your PAYG Payment Summary, to have your tax return prepared and your questions answered.
