How long will owing previous taxes delay my refund?
Q. I am currently on an installment plan with the IRS for some previous taxes owed. The amount of my refund this year will exceed the amount I still owe and I know this will come out of my current refund. How long will this delay my receiving the remainder of my refund? Thanks!

A. A couple of weeks tops. You will get credit for your refund as of the date the return is processed.

There is not a reason code on IRS website for refund delay?
Q. I had an original deposit date of 2/13. No money yesterday so I checked the WMR website. It changed my date to the 24th now. There is not a reason code on my inquiry (1201 or 1301, etc) as other people claim they get. Has anyone had this issue? If so, did you get your refund the next week?

A. The same thing happened to me. My DD date was changed from the 17th to the 24th, this past Monday. I haven't checked today.

If the IRS takes back taxes out of your current return how long will that delay my refund?
Q. I owe federal and state taxes from last year and my CPA said the IRS would take that money out of this years tax return, which is fine. My question is how long will that delay me getting whatever refund is left over? I usually get my check within about a week of filing. Thanks.
Asked by Kristy Lynn - Fri Feb 5 10:58:12 2010 - - 0 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Your accountant will be able to include that in your tax calculations for 2009. Line 59 of your 1040 form allows for the addition of the "Additional other taxes worksheet" which can include back taxes from tax year 2008.

A. The worst case is that they are auditing your return. If you opted for a check, it may be delayed in the mail. You can go to their website and check the status of your return online.

How long will an offset delay my tax refund?
Q. Orginally my tex refund was set to direct deposit sometime around 2/17, but now when I check the IRS website it is saying that it will be delayed. I called the IRS and was told that there is an offset due to my husband owing from a previous year (married filing jointly) and that it is scheduled to come out on 2/23. I was told that I should expect my refund a few weeks after that. This doesn't really give me a clear frame of time.

If I owe IRS money will it delay what refund I have left?
Q. I filed and it says I should recieve my refund by January 29th. Will it be longer if they have to take money out of it for tax I owe and if so how much time will it take.
Asked by keeperslady77 - Sat Jan 19 13:05:50 2008 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments
A. According to the IRS it can delay your remaing refund for 4 - 6 weeks. That said, I've seen folks get theirs on time even though part of the refund was captured for back taxes. I suspect that a debt to the IRS processes quickly while debts for child support or student loans have to be verified with outside agencies first, hence the delay for some and lack of delay for others.

Q. i have a past due for maryland state tax of about $800 that i haven't been able to pay (tax year 2005, filed in feb of 2006). is that what an "offset" is? this year i'm getting back $4000 from federal and owe maryland $100. i did an e-file through HR Block on feb 26, 2007. the IRS website says it should've been direct deposited on march 9, 2007 but still haven't gone in to my account. i'm guessing it's because of the $800 i owe for tax year 2005. is that what's causing the delay? can someone explain to me in plain english what's going on. i don't know anytihng about this stuff. are they going to deduct $800 of my $4000 return this year to pay for last years state tax i owe? being that i should've gotten the refund already (except… [cont.]

A. Well I will say that when you e-file and want direct deposit it can take between 8-15days. Since you filed on the 26 of February, today is actually the 15th day, but I don't know if H& R Block files straight away or if they go back and double check your return like some other tax preparation services. If they do then that will make your refund come a little later. Also if they we supposed to deposit on the 9th which was a Friday, that may be set off by the weekend. The CPA that I work for said that normally they do not take past year State balance dues out of the Federal refund. If you were getting a refund this year from MD then they would take your balance due from last year out of this year's refund from state. There is a separation… [cont.]

If I file a business loss and trigger an audit, will that delay my refund?
Q. HR Block says that my loss on my business may trigger an audit. If I file it anyway, will that slow down my refund. I have the records to back up my loss. We are in the building stage of this plant nursery. But I need my refund. Will they hold up my refund until the audit is done, or will they give me my refund, then audit?

A. It depends on how quickly they decide to audit you. The loss does not guarantee you an audit

I owe a child support arrear - will this delay my refund?
Q. And if so by how long usually. It's $1500 of back child support arrears, and I filed my taxes at HR Block today for the 8-15 day refund direct deposited in my checking account. Is this going to be an easy 8-15 days or will it be delayed by weeks because they are going to take this child support arrear? Anyone have any idea? My total refund was $6000. I only owe $1500 in back child support arrears. Thanks for the info. Now does this just delay my Federal refund? Will it affect my state refund?

A. Yes it will delay your refund...normally just a week but it could be longer. It all depends on when the Financial Management Services (FMS) releases the rest of your refund. The number for FMS is 1-800-304-3107 if you'd like to discuss it with them. Hope this helps.

Would ammending your taxes delay your refund?
Q. I should have had it DD by today. My bank says they don't have anything. I owed $15 from my ammendment, and they cleared the check 4/17/08. WTH??? I got that letter before hand.
Asked by Therapist - Fri May 2 10:45:07 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Every 1040X is different. The changes cause many people to owe more in tax...and while you paid the tax, many people don't. Consequently, the IRS flags your account as pending until the 1040X is fully processed (8-12 weeks from when you submitted it) and will not release any refund until then. Historically, 1040X refunds have been by check. The rebate logic is a grand experiment so it might be direct deposited even 3 months from now.

Is there a minimum amount owed to create an offset in my refund? Will a 75.00 offset delay my refund?
Q. How long does an offset usually delay?
Asked by T - Wed Jan 23 13:59:00 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There isn't a minimum offset amount. It will delay your return becuase the IRS will actually have to do the offset and then they will issue you the rest. When you file your taxes, you can go to the irs website, and click on where's my refund about a week after filing. It will tell you when you will recieve it.

A. You asked this question an hour ago and the answer hasn't changed since then. Please don't post the same question multiple times. When the money shows up in your account depends upon how your bank processes ACH transactions. Some banks process them in real time around the clock. In that case the money would turn up in your account within a few hours of the IRS sending it, though many banks won't make it available to you until the beginning of the next banking day. Other banks batch-process all transactions at the end of the banking day. If your deposit was sent with the Thursday transmittals from the IRS, your bank would not process it until Friday evening. The money would not be available to you in your account until the beginning… [cont.]

Has anyone had a delay with their tax refund and stimulus check?
Q. We filed the day of the deadline (husband got lazy and waited). We have checked online and it says there is a delay. We have tried to call but we can never get anyone. We call almost every day. Wait on hold foever, nothing. Other days can't even get through. Also, we're getting reference number 1201

A. Heya Cristina! I got mine on time. Whoever is the primary on your taxes (either you or your husband) it goes by the last 2 digits of their social security number. For example. If the primary has a last 2 digits social security number of 00, then they would get their stimulus check earliest. If your digits are in the 90's..then you will get yours much later. There is a website you can go to and it will tell you the timeframe of when to expect your check. the website is exactly below: www.irs.gov/individuals/a rticle/0,,id=181665,00.ht ml I hope it tells you what you want to know. ttyl :)

A. if you got your refund why are you checking, now the system is confused because your refund was issued and someone is still checking the status.

Am I the only one with a 2/6 refund deposit changed to a 1301 delay code for 2 weeks still waiting?
Q. I have called IRS several times and I am told that the return is in error resolution department but there is no reason listed but there have been no adjustments made to my expected refund amount. There is also no deposit date as of 2/23. Please share similar stories.

A. They update Tuesday Midnight. Wednesdays you will see a change if there will be one. I had a DD of 2/17. Today it was changed to I should have my refund by 3/10. On that note, I will probably be getting another update on Wednesday morning on 3/11 telling me a different reason because from what I understand the refunds are not direct deposited on any days but Friday.
