Is my refund check from college financial aid going to be taxed when I file taxes?
Q. I received a $2000 refund check this year for college. When I file taxes this year, will I owe taxes on that amount since I did not use it for educational purposes? And none of this money was from loans.
Asked by - Fri Dec 17 15:33:19 2010 - United States - 5 Answers - Comments

A. If it was from grants or scholarships and any of it was spend on something other than allowable education expenses, then yes that much is taxable income - show it as miscellaneous income on your tax return.

What happens if i get a refund anticipation loan, and the canada revune service keeps my refund?
Q. In Canada they offer the instant refund, or refund anticipaion loan at our tax offices. My question is how do they know the canada revenue agency isnt holding my refund ? what if they give me a loan based on my tax refund and come to find out, i dont get a refund? I dont need advice on wether or not to get one. But I have a feeling my refund might be held this year.
Asked by - Mon Jan 3 15:30:35 2011 - Canada - 4 Answers - Comments

A. Companies which offer instant refunds are very careful about who they offer the deal to. First, they are very conservative when they calculate your refund (for example, they don't include certain deductions which might not pass muster with CRA). Second, they check with CRA to see if you owe them any money. They use a system called SEND (System for Electronic Notification of Debt), where CRA will tell them if you're in arrears. You won't get an instant refund if there's any chance CRA will withhold it.

What does this tax question mean regarding refund of state/local taxes?
Q. "Did you receive a refund of state and/or local income taxes during 2009 from your 2008 tax return or a prior year tax return?" In 2008 we got a refund because we overpaid from what they took out of our paychecks. Does this mean I enter how much the refund was? Or is this talking about some other kind of refund? I use the standard deduction and the money where the refund comes from was withheld from my paycheck.

A. Tax refunds from state and local governments are treated as income by the IRS and must be reported on your federal tax return.

When does a refund get posted to your debit account after returning something ?
Q. I returned a product yesterday morning and I still don't see the refund in my statements. They did swipe my card during the return process .Is this normal or a mistake on their part ?? When will it show on my debit card ? Thanks NFM !
Asked by Hellokitty2010 - Tue May 4 07:32:57 2010 - Credit - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Some stores will swipe the card again for a return, look at the receipt that was given to you, it will say credit. The speed of the refund depends on how quickly your bank processes the transaction. Normally it takes 2-3 days.

How a refund is adjusted by accountants after it has been posted to accounts?
Q. Hi all, A Scenario ...There is service cancellation after it is rendered in a hospital, probably a day after, which may be due to any reason (either from doctors' or patients' side). This results in refunding of money to patient. So now, the question is how this refund is adjusted by accountants after it has been posted to accounts.

The service charges are reversed in concerned services charges accounts or The refund are booked in seprate account and after a specific period total of that account is transfered to service charge accounts. Overall effect of both the system will be same.

REFUND...???
Q. recently i received a refund on a low payoff for a car i just bought can someone explain it??? i asked the dealer but they didnt make much sense...
Asked by angie - Thu Aug 7 00:05:13 2008 - Buying & Selling - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Your refund wasnt on the car you bought. IT was on the car you traded in. You traded a car that was financed with a bank. At the time, the dealer used an estimated payoff. All teh contracts were written using that estimated number. When they paid off the loan, the balance was actually less than they had accounted for in the contract, so they sent you the difference. Lets say they estimated your payoff to the bank at 10k. When they called the bank and got a firm payoff quote, the bank said you owed 9700. Since all teh contracts say 10k, you get 300 back. Its much easier to do that then rewrite all the contracts

A. It usually only takes 2-3 business days so I hope you still have the credit receipt. You should call your credit card company and tell them you are expecting a credit for this purchase and they can tell you the hold up.

How much refund can I get from my taxes if I only earned $5k?
Q. I earned about $5k for 2007. I had my employer withhold max amount of taxes for me. If I were to file taxes, how much refund can I receive? I heard if you earn below certain amount, you get back most of your taxes. I am a student, my parents claimed me as a dependent. Does that affect the claim?
Asked by sangamania - Wed Jan 23 23:09:34 2008 - United States - 2 Answers - Comments

A. You are going to get every penny back! If you claim yourself, you get to lower your income by $3,500. As a single you get another $5,000+ to reduce your income. That moves you below the threshold, so enjoy that refund!

Q. I mailed (not e-file) my federal return about two weeks ago... Anyone know how long until I get my refund? Will I get the $600 (or was it $800?) extra federal refund (per the economic stimulus bill) at the same time, or are they mailing that out later? Did anyone get theirs yet?

A. Paper returns take a little while to process. Since you did not mail at the deadline, it might be 4-6 weeks for you refund. The rebates will go out separately starting in May, but the IRS has not yet determined the order in which they will be mailed. According to the IRS: The IRS will begin sending taxpayers their payments in early May. Payments will continue over several weeks during the spring and summer. A payment schedule for taxpayers will be announced in the near future. Keep checking the IRS site below for more news. It's the only official, reliable source of information about the rebate.

I get a refund during the grace period on a credit card statement, can I reduce the payment accordingly?
Q. I had a credit card statement of 1000. Within 4 days I get a refund of 200 during the grace period of 15 days. The payment date then follows 11 days later and the credit card company still try to take 1000 - so making my credit card a positive balance - which is not what I want! Can I insist on only paying 800? They then tell me that I will be charged to taking cash out of a positive balanced credit card. Can they do that? What is stupid is that if I dispute 200 - they will only take 800. Some credit card companies do not do this - but if you stop the direct debit (especially on a charge card) and just pay the actual account balance - then there is no charge. If I decide to pay my bill in 3 parts for example during the grace period so the… [cont.]

A. Both you and the credit card company are trying to use the rules to their advantage. That is why I do NOT set up auto-pay agreements when I can pay on line myself. However, if I forget to make the payment, then I am up the creek. Auto-pay arrangements avoid forgetfulness. Some credit card companies do reduce the minimum payment by the credits when they are on the account books. Some do not do so until the bill is printed which would place the 200 against the next payment. You need to review the minimum payment schedule for the account. It should also have information how credits are applied. When you do in fact have a credit balance after paying off the account, most will send you a refund check without a fee. Verify that with this account. [cont.]

A. 1 to 5 mailing days in most of the country. Most checks are mailed from Philadelphia so 2 or 3 days would be reasonable to WV. BTW, don't waste your time ranting at the spammers. That crap is posted by bots and the dirt-bags that do that crap never see what you post. Just report them as spam so we can get rid of them.

How does the refund process for a college class exactly work?
Q. I changed my mind on a class I'm registered and am worried about the refund process because my dad paid with a credit card. Does anyone know exactly how it works? Does the credit simply get placed back into the card?

A. No...at Penn State, where I went, if you drop a class, the refund check gets sent to your house (where you live when you're not at school...actually, I was off campus, so it may get sent to your dorm..but since this is summer I assume you're living off campus) and it's your name. Only you can cash it. It may be different, because it's a different school.

A. You could take the advice to keep it, which would be stealing and dishonest, but some people think that's O.K. Obviously you have more integrity than some and are wondering how to fix the error. I had a similar problem recently with an elderly client who got a $13,000 refund out of the blue. I called the IRS and they said the money was attributable to an estimated tax payment, and it was "hers to keep." I knew that was bogus. It must have been incorrectly credited to her account at the IRS in the first place, and the phone person wasn't about to make any effort to see if there was a mistake, much less fix it. My advice is to wait for the IRS to send you a notice saying they issued you a refund in error and they want their money… [cont.]

How does a federal tax refund work?
Q. I have two W2's since I interned with my employer in 2 different states over the course of 2 semesters last year. If I enter the information for just one W2 (around $10K) into turbotax (and some other tax applications), it shows a federal refund amount of $850, but if I add the second W2 (also around $10K) the federal refund amount drops to $450. Is this right? Shouldn't the refund amount increase?

A. Check with the sales tax administering agency for the state in which you made the purchases. Texas, for example, would refund the sales tax if the purchases were used in the operation of a maquiladora, but apparently not for any other reason.
