How do I report a death to stop constant jury duty summonses?
Q. My father has past away but NYC is constantly sending him jury duty summonses in the mail. How to I notify them that he has past away and obviously cannot attend jury duty? Who do I contact? Is a copy of the death certificate needed? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

A. You can send them a copy of your fathers' death certificate. OR... Me, I'd ignore each one that came in the mail...Let them come to "arrest him"...They can't "touch you" about anything because the Summonses are not addressed to YOU. When the "arresting officer" shows up, hand HIM the death certificate...Word will get back...

How do the jury duty people know if I still live in the state?
Q. And if they send a jury duty notice to an address that I don't live at anymore, and nobody responds, will they issue a warrant for my arrest? How do I prevent this? I travel a lot for extensive periods of time.
Asked by Tyrone - Sun Dec 17 08:35:00 2006 - Civic Participation - 7 Answers - 1 Comments
A. The jury is selected from the DMV records as well as voter registration. While you may not let voter registration know right way. Most notify DMV on time.

What is purpose of jury duty questionnaires?
Q. I got a jury duty questionnaire in the mail. I heard rumors that once you get the questionnaire it is only a matter of months before you get summoned to be on jury. Is that true? I know! some of those questions are none of their business.

A. Where do you live? Never heard of them sending out questionnaires in advance of jury duty but here's your chance to get out of it! Just respond outrageously to the questions and you'll most likely not have to deal with it...Personally, I would not answer a questionnaire like that if I didn't have to. Some of the stuff they ask you is just none of their business if you haven't even been picked.

Jury duty?
Q. I read today on Yahoo how man was in trouble for trying to get out of jury duty. He told the judge he didn't like gays, he had been known to be racist and lie. What would you say to get out of jury duty?

A. I would NOT try to dodge jury duty. I would, however, probably never be seated on a jury because of my beliefs. I am a big believer in punishment for a crime. Rehab can happen too, but only secondarily. And yeah, I am a big fan of Ol' Sparky (or equivalent).

How can I get out of jury duty because I get called too often?
Q. For some reason, I get called for jury duty every single year. My husband and friends hardly ever get called. I have been lucky the past few times. Either my number is not needed, or when I go, I am dismissed in the waiting room. I run a business from home, I have two children, and I can't afford to take time off to do jury duty. They just called me again for the middle of June and I asked for a postponment because I don't want this potentially messing up my entire summer vacation plans. Please don't flame me with "civic duty" stuff. I have served on jurys before and I am tired of doing it. Please tell me the best excuses to tell the judge so that I can be excused from service, in case my number comes up again at my postponment… [cont.]

A. I am in real estate. I told them, if I don't work, I don't eat. They asked me to put that in writing and I was dismissed. Haven't recieved a call back since. Tell them exactly what you told us, that you run a home business and do not get paid for time off of work. They should be very understanding about it. :)

What is the process of serving jury duty?
Q. I got a notice in the mail saying that I have been considered for jury duty. I've been told to fill out a questionaire, which I am required by law to fill in and mail back. The letter says, according to the questionairre, people will be randomly selected for jury duty. If I am selected, what is to be expected in the jury?

A. You'll go the court house on the appointed date, get a number, and then do a lot of sitting around until you're called to sit for a trial. If you're not called, you'll be dismissed. As for what happens if you DO get on a jury. . .You'll sit in the courtroom, hopefully taking notes as you listen to the trial, and then make a decision on the case along with the other jurors.

JURY Duty?!?
Q. i woke up and decided i was well enough to walk down stairs (since i am recoving from surgery) and i find in my mail a letter that is summoning me to jury duty for the month of May. This wouldn't be a big deal at all if i weren't A) still in highschool until June 2nd when i will graduate B) i'm trying to start a new job for summer C) pretty much will be gone in summer until june 26 and D) getting ready to go to the university of alabama in august... so how on earth do i get out of jury duty? Can they really make an 18 yr old still going to highschool participate in jury duty.. because i feel i'd miss out on my school work/tests and i would be at a great disadvantage. Oh i live in Kentucky by the way.

Jury Duty starts in January but have a new job starting next week?
Q. I start work as a dental assistant on Monday and I'll be trained right in the dentist office. The problem is I have jury duty starting January 3rd. We are off Christmas week so I only have one week of work before I have to start jury duty. I don't want to have to take off of work so soon after starting. Is this a good enough excuse to be excused from jury duty? Should I write or call the jury commissioner and ask for an excusal? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A. By law, your employer must excuse you for jury duty. Your better bet will be to explain the situation to your employer and ask to be excused from work for jury duty.

Who actually still likes serving jury duty?
Q. I just got through serving jury duty. Even though I just had to report for one day, I could not stand it. It's so boring sitting there doing nothing. I know I should feel a sense of duty for our country and all but I am just worried about job security right now. The economy the way it is I can't waste time making $15 a day with the possibilty of being laid off when I get back. What do you think?

A. Who in their right mind ever did? Jury duty is a job and therefore should get at least minimum wage to do that job (I think it should be more).

Why should jury duty be mandatory instead of optional?
Q. I think jury duty should be optional instead of mandatory. At least don't make it mandatory. Make it optional. Of course, some jurors like to do the service if they like to.

A. The jury system currently sucks, I'll agree. I've seen a person in a professional competition for $100,000 get completely stiffed by the system. If you don't pay somebody for their time, you certainly have no right to ruin their most important professional opportunity for years. In another instance, my father, brother, and myself were all summoned...at the same time for the same case. How does having three members of the same immediate family on a jury make any sense? There is also the issue of some things that jurors are subjected to. Some evidence comes in the form of pictures, audio, images...how can any government believe that it has any right to FORCE citizens to watch child rape or other things of that nature???

How do I tell my professors I have jury duty, so close to graduation, don't want to withdraw?
Q. I have been summened for jury duty during school. I only go to school part time. But I would hate to have a lengthy trail and miss school. How do I get my teachers to work with me? I can still do all the work and projects. But missing more that 2 weeks of school could force them to force me to withdraw from the courses. I am so close to graduation and don't want to do withdraw from that classes. What can I do to convince them?

A. You have a civic obligation to be present for jury duty. You may be able to call the Court Clerk and explain your situation and may be excused for that. If not, during jury selection you can explain your situation that you are a student, and they will probably excuse you. Worst case scenario, if you have to be a juror, your school is not allowed to penalize you for doing what the law compels you to do. If they do, they can be held criminally liable, both individually and as an institution.

What is the penalty for skipping jury duty?
Q. I recently received a letter in the mail stating that I need to do jury duty. Along with the letter came a questionnaire to fill out or an excuse form if I decide there's a reason I can't do it. To make a long story short I have a very valid reason for not being able to do it and I included documents verifying this reason. However, the reason was not listed on the excuse form as one of the accepted excuses. In the event that I can't get out of it, what is the penalty for skipping?

What are some common questions asked during the jury duty screening?
Q. Any one that's had jury duty can help me out by telling me any question they remember The case in question is murder involving battered child syndrome
Asked by Jokerz Wild - Thu Nov 20 23:33:55 2008 - Civic Participation - 2 Answers - Comments
A. It all depends on what kind of case you're assigned to. Like 50 people go to a courtroom and depending on the case, those are the questions they ask. For instance I had a drug case and they asked me questions like, do you know anyone in law enforcement, do you know anyone who's been convicted of drugs, by looking at the defendant have you already made your decision if he has done the crime or not...blah blah blah. Then the lawyers from both sides either make you stay or dismiss you.

Where do they keep you if you have to stay overnight for jury duty?
Q. I know that sometimes people who are serving jury duty are kept overnight. I know a couple of people who had to do that, but I forgot to ask them where they were kept. I guess the court doesn't want any jurors to be influenced by outside sources on the case that they are doing, so they keep them overnight. Where do they keep you if you have to stay overnight for jury duty? Thanks.

A. The Casey Anthony trial was a trial that was subject to a lot of media scrutiny, so as you might expect the jury was sequestered in a hotel room for the duration of the trial. Over 99% of cases do not involve sequestering, so you are not likely to experience that if you're called for jury service. If you're sequestered, your choice of recreational activities will be lmited, although the Sheriff's Office may be able to establish some activities for you on Sundays. Outside of sequestering, the court may arrange for you to reside in a hotel room if daily travel to the courthouse would create an extreme hardship for you (most likely at the federal court system). If this is your case, you will still be able to conduct your lives like normal… [cont.]
