A. I hope this helps - Dear Judge, please don't lock up this poor man. It was an accident that he violently invaded another's home and stole things. Usually he is a great guy. He helps me take care of my daughter because her "real" dad is a deadbeat. It's not his fault that he is evil because he had a rough life, it's societies fault. Please don't punish him or else I might have to get a job to afford child care.

Character Reference Letter for an Older women?
Q. My neighbor a senior, asked me to write a character reference letter. It's not for a job or school. I guess they just want to know about her personality. My Word doc is empty for the past hour. I started with "I felt quite honored when my neighbor ---asked me to write a reference letter for her" and from her I'm blank. Anyone care to help me? She is a very Caring, Intelligent and independant woman. I really love her and I want to help her. Thanks

A. Dude you pretty much just started it. You said it's not for a job or school, then who is it for? "To Whom It May Concern, I felt quite honored when my neighbor Betty Rubble asked me to write a letter of reference for her. In the time that I have known Betty, she has proven to be not only an ideal neighbor, but a caring, intelligent, wise, and independent woman. She is always a pleasure to talk to and visit with, and I look forward to helping her in anyway I can. If you have any questions or need any further information, feel free to give me a call. Sincerely, YOU" It doesn't have to be an autobiography. Just a few kind words should suffice. It would be key to find out what the reference was for and make some kind of a reference… [cont.]

How do I write a character reference letter for a friend that is trying to obtain a pistol permit?
Q. I have been asked to write this reference for her, but she has not given me any guidelines to do so. Is there any official forms to fill out or is it like a job reference letter just something off the hip? I mean you go and ask someone to write a reference for you. I expect a little more than a snotty e-mail asking me why I haven't done it yet, after I had sent numerous e-mails to her asking the requirements to write it.
Asked by nouvonight - Sun Feb 8 10:43:56 2009 - Law & Ethics - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Well, if the person with the responsibility of issuing the permit dropped by and asked you how you feel about letting your friend out in public armed, what would you tell him? Put it in a letter.

Q. I wrote a character reference for a friend, to take to court... does this sound okay?? Should I add anything or take anything out!? please help asap! Thanx in advance! --- To Whom It May Concern, I, write this character reference on behalf of (Mr. John Smith). I have known Mr. Smith for almost one year, since September of 2006. He is my sister "Jane s" fiancee. John is friendly, courteous, determined, and has a great concern for others. Though I gave him the cold shoulder at our first introduction, he remained well-mannered and continuously surprised me with his politeness. He is constantly trying to better himself and make those around him feel welcomed. In conclusion, I honestly believe that John has good intentions in mind,… [cont.]

A. I would take out: "Though I gave him the cold shoulder at our first introduction, he remained well-mannered and continuously surprised me with his politeness." I understand your point, but it serves no real purpose. Other than that, it's a good letter.

how to write a character reference letter for my son who is going to court for intent to sell?

Asked by Brenda A - Fri Dec 7 11:49:51 2007 - Law & Ethics - 3 Answers - Comments

A. It's probably best if someone other then a his own parents wrote the refernce, some one like a school teacher, coach, family friend, employer. The letter needs to contain that they know what he did and that it's out of character for the person and that there is hope of reform or list what has been done to show refrom. The courts are looking for signs of reform.

How to write an effective character reference letter for my male friend who is seeking full custody of his kid
Q.
Asked by - Thu Jul 24 15:27:38 2008 - Etiquette - 1 Answers - Comments

A. You want to talk about the length of time you've known him, qualities and skills he has that make him a good father. You want to stick to facts and things you know first hand, not what he's told you. Don't try to make the mother sound bad, focus on making him sound good. If you know of situations where he's dealt with serious issues for them, or that show what a good provider he is, or what a great problem solver he can be, how supportive he is, those would be good to include as well. Also, if you've witnessed his interactions with them, your impression of the relationship they have together.

A. Why bother? He killed someone. Who cares how nice he seemed to be and that he was a good little boy scout who loved his mother and helped old ladies cross the street? Which is the kind of stuff people put in character references. I wonder if the judge pays a whole lot of attention to those references from people who just can't believe that little Johnny would do such a thing. I know I wouldn't and I'm what some people on this website would call a "bleeding heart liberal (aka a Democrat).

What information should be included in a character(personal)refere nce letter?
Q. If I am writting a personal reference letter for someone what info should I include in this letter?
Asked by Bert & Ernie - Sun Jul 27 21:54:00 2008 - Law & Legal - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Personal letters usually include things like how long you have known the person, your take on their personality, work ethics etc. I usually will write something like: I have know Dick for the past five years and find him to be of strong character. He is a reliable and trustworthy friend (acquaintance, etc) that I can rely on when called upon. He currently volunteers as a leader and mentor to our local day camp. etc...etc... In closing if you were to give Dick a chance I know you would find him to be an asset to your company. Regards, You basically put things in you know about the person and how you feel about the person in general. If they are asking you for a character reference I am assuming you are friends or work closely together.

A. What kind of position that he has applied for? Try to find his character that would match up that is needed for the job position that he has applied for. Here's how I would write a reference letter for him. 1. First paragraph: Explain how you know your friend and how long you have know him. 2. Second paragraph: In what respect is your friend exceptional to others you have known with a similar background? List his exceptional qualities and skills, especially those that are related to the applicant's field of interest or job search. Give specific examples to back up what you have written. or Refer to your friend's competency in a specific field and/or prior experience, organizational and communication skills, academic or other achievements,… [cont.]

Does anyone have any guidance or a sample letter of character for a friend who is in a child custody battle?
Q. Does anyone have any guidance or a sample letter of character reference to give to a Judge for a friend who is in a child custody battle with her parents over her daughter.
Asked by jhayden1496 - Tue Aug 15 16:18:13 2006 - Law & Ethics - 2 Answers - Comments

A. I don't know what state you're in, but in California, letters of character don't amount to squat. These type of cases are immediately referred to a family court mediator who reports directly to the judge on what they believe to be the best case scenario for the child in question. But if your state has a provision for such things I would just keep it simple i.e. how you know them , how long you've known them , your general opinion of them ( very general) remember one thing , they don't want to spend more than 10 min reading a novel on a plaintiff/ defendant they don't really care about anyway. I know you care and that's nice for your Friend , Good luck with that!
